Playing catchup ... Part II (The End of an Era)

Ever since Maggie was 10 months old, give or take, we've been attending a weekly playgroup. The original moms (Karen, Alicia, Michelle, Kim, Evelyn, Petra, and Becky) met through a breastfeeding support group at the hospital where we all delivered. Kim sent an email to the entire support group, asking if anyone was interested in being part of a playgroup, and the rest is history.

At first it was totally for the moms. We were all stay-at-home moms, and we craved a bit of adult conversation and companionship with other moms whose kids were approximately the same age. That first winter, we met in an empty room at my church ... we'd all bring toys and the babies would just crawl around and play while the moms talked. As the kids got older, we started meeting at parks, playgrounds, and within people's homes. These outdoor get-togethers led to us meeting other wonderful moms, and our group has blossomed in the past three years. Watching our children interact with each other more has been lots of fun, and the friendships we moms have formed will last, no doubt, for a very very long time.

This past Monday was our last official playgroup get-together. Maggie will be in preschool MWF this fall, and she starts Kindermusik this coming Monday. (The KM class is immediately after her preschool finishes, and both are located at our church. I just hope it's not too hard on her going from one activity to the other, but if it is, we'll say good-bye to KM.) The playgroup is splitting into two groups -- most will continue to meet on Mondays, but a handful of us will get together on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays. We're also planning family cookouts and moms-only nights out to ensure our friendships stay strong.

For our big finale, we went to Pump It Up, an inflatable jumpy place, followed by lunch together. (You should have seen the tables we connected ... there were eight moms and 16 kids. The staff of McAlister's did a wonderful job accommodating such a big group.

Here are some photos of our day. First, Maggie and Rebekah on the slide.

Pow-wow at the top of the slide. Maggie doesn't look too happy, does she? From left are Maggie, Heidi, Meghan, and Rebekah.

Here's our big group at lunch:

This is completely unrelated, but here's a person Maggie drew yesterday. This is seriously as much artistic talent as she's ever exhibited ... Bobby and I were tres impressed. The funny thing is, she kept saying this wasn't a happy man, it was an angry man. I wish I lived in a world where angry people had huge smiles on their faces.

That's so sad about the group splitting up, but at least it's for good reasons and not because relationships have soured. It's so hard to keep up with things like that when the kids all get older and have differing schedules. I hope everything goes well with preschool, new groups and mom's nights!
